In part 2 of this blog post we will look into more detail at the muscles that cause lower back pain. 

The most common of these supporting muscles that cause lower back pain, instability and imbalances are:

  • Quadratus Lumborum
  • Gluteal muscle group
  • Hamstring muscle group


The QL muscle starts at the pelvis and runs up to the lowest rib and is essential in stabilizing the pelvis when a person is upright. It also helps the core of the body when breathing. This muscle can be a primary concern when lower back pain is experienced.

Symptoms of QL pain include tightness and discomfort in the lower back region. Pain is often described as a deep aching pain but may also be felt as a sharp and acute.

Causes of QL pain includes but is not limited to: 

  • Sitting for long periods of time
  • Poor posture
  • Weak muscles
  • Unequal leg length
  • Trauma

Several treatments may help relieve QL pain. In some cases home treatment can be effective and in others a combination of home treatment and medical care is necessary. The following combination is found to be very effective:
